MIC Equipment Rules

Introduction: Microscopes are delicate and well-maintained instruments benefit our imaging and research. A lot goes into keeping up the various microscopes that we have in MIC. And your care and effort as users are essential. We hope these rules will lead to more effective use and less breakdowns on this very important and useful resource for core users.
1. Training requirement: New users must get on iLab and request access to the core. A training/orientation with the instrument’s designated contact listed through the iLab scheduling site must be scheduled before using each microscope.
2. Instrument scheduling requirement: We use iLab as our calendar booking system. Every use of shared instrumentation should be booked on the calendar before using the instrument, regardless of length or time.
3. Data transfer: You are responsible for your data. All data should be removed from local hard-drives within 2 weeks after acquisition. All data transfer should through mapped network drive. All USB plugins are forbidden on the imaging acquisition PCs.
4. Cancellation policy: Cancellation is only allowed up to 24 hours prior to your scheduled session. Full price will be charged for missing scheduled imaging session. Please email Kun Huang for any reason missing scheduled imaging session.
5. Late policy: Please do not be late for more than 30 min for your schedule session. Once you are late for more than 30 min, the iLab system will automatically turn into “no show” and the slot will open up for new users. If the spot is not end up taking by other users, you will be charged according to the booking time at full price.
6. Login policy: Please login the iLab Kiosk site before using each instrument. Click “start” to enable usage tracking. Click “stop” only when you finish using the instrument.
7. Ending experiment procedure: Check iLab schedule before turning off the instrument. If there is another user coming in, please simply log off and leave the instrument on. Fully shut down the instrument if you are the last user of the day.
8. Report problem and damages: Any issues with an instrument following your usage will automatically be considered a violation regardless of whether you caused the issue. The only way to prevent this is to inform the instrument contact about issues with the instrument immediately after starting your run or when the issue occurs. You must report this in writing (email) to time and date stamp the issue. We will rely on your email to determine fault. Though mentioning it to the instrument lead is helpful, verbal report must be accompanied by an email.  We will then investigate the cause of the breakdown to determine actions.

Protection of objectives
1. Please make sure to lower objective to lowest position when changing slides and switching objectives.
2. Please do not put more than 1 drop of immersion oil on the oil objectives.
2. To clean the water objective: wipe the water drop using lens paper (smooth side) and wipe only toward one direction to avoid dust rubbing on the objective. Move to a new area and wipe again. Repat for three wipes total.
3. To clean the oil objective: damp the lens paper with Sparkle and wipe only toward one direction to avoid dust rubbing on the objective. Move to a new area and wipe again. Repat for three wipes total or till no more oil residual.
4. Lower the objective to the lowest position when finish imaging.
5. An objective damage due to improper usage will result in revoke of the independent usage type of the user and potential charge to the lab due based on the damage.
